How To Update The Master Bedroom On A Budget
Whenever I do any home project I set a budget and do my best to stick with it. I had wanted to update my master bedroom for some time. But I knew it would need to be with in a certain budget.
I also wanted to use wallpaper in my bedroom but not on all the walls. Thinking I would do a statement wall to create a wow factor! I also wanted drapery although they needed to be affordable, elegant, and neutral. New lighting in the room would be nice as well such as a chandelier, and bedside lamps. Adding some new bedding is a beautiful way to update a master bedroom too. One other item I wanted to try and fit in the budget was a new area rug for the room.
Staying in the budget with what I wanted to create in the master bedroom might be a challenge. But I love a challenge, don’t you!
So lets talk about how to update the master bedroom on a budget.
So I started on the plan to update our master bedroom!
A plan to update a master bedroom on a budget
My plan to update the master bedroom is where I started first. I wrote my plan down on paper, that’s right on paper!
I wrote down everything I wanted my room to be, calming, comfortable, cozy, serene, and elegant! This is a tall order on a short budget lol! But I was determined to make this room happen!
The color’s in a room are so very important as is the want’s for a room! For myself calm colors in a room are soft, such as white’s, creams, beiges, grays, and maybe a hint of a little color.
Placement of color is another important part of decorating a room and adding it to the right areas of the room. This way you end up with a cohesive flow to the room.
When on a budget you need to save where you can so you may use some of the décor all ready in the room. So this is something to keep in mind when choosing colors and accessories to add to the room.
So let’s get going on the the master bedroom update!
Decorating A Master Bedroom On A Budget
The first thing to do is set a budget when decorating unless of course the funds are unlimited!
I had already decide how I wanted my room to feel.
Next I decided how I wanted my room to function. My husband likes to watch television in our room and I need a calm place where I can read and fall asleep with ease!
When all our kids lived at home our master bedroom was a place to gather at night and talk! What wonderful talks we had! It also was a place where dogs joined in too, oh how I miss those days! Back then our room had deeper tones, harder fabric with lots of texture, you can understand why with four kids and two dogs!
We still have a dog and I watch my daughters dog, they love the master bedroom and jump on the bed often! So fabric needs to be durable for our room.
I had a lot to think about on how I want our master bedroom to function and how to in-corporate all of our needs into this update and stay with in the budget.
Let’s set the budget!
How to set a Budget For The Master Bedroom Update
How to set a budget for a master bedroom update. I’m sure you may have been thinking about this.
How much should you spend on updating a bedroom, the main bedroom at that!
This of course is a personal preference or what would be most affordable.
What might also set the budget is what you plan to update in the master bedroom.
When setting my budget I chose what items I would re-use, what I could afford to update and what items I wanted to change but were not in the budget.
Next I thought about where I would shop for the bedroom updates. This will play an important part of the budget as well.
I decided I would purchase some items new, some second hand and create or craft some for our room myself. If you have been at House of Mar for a bit you know I love to thrift! Most of my home is from thrifting. It really does keep me in a home updating allowance!
When writing this all down on paper as I plan my master bedroom update I know what I’ll purchase new and what I’ll thrift.
Tips on how to purchase items for a budget room update.
Sharing a few tips on what items I will purchase new and what items I will purchase thrifting for update.
Bedding and linens I will purchase new, also the area rug. Lighting I felt certain I could purchase thrifting as well as a few accessories to stay in the budget.
There are a few stores such as Tuesday Morning, Marshalls, and TJ Maxx they carry beautiful inexpensive bedding. I also check the end caps at certain stores for pillow shams, pillow cases, sheets and blankets. Bed linens don’t need to match perfectly for a pretty bed. Actually different textures and color tones help to make a room look very elegant!
Thrifting for light fixtures, lamps and accessories on the face book market place will keep me in budget. There are usually many items priced way below market value on these sites. Thrift stores are another great source for updating any décor in the home! I certainly have my favorites in my area and they always have nice items for decorating any room! I often share these places in My Saturday Scoop News letter. You can access the Saturday Scoop through signing up for my emails.
There are also many online home décor sites to choose from when updating a room or home. I always catch a sale at the end of the season it’s the best time to get a discount.
So where to begin when doing an update on a bedroom
I started with the wallpaper and this turned out to be a bit of a process because of the budget. Wallpaper can be quite expensive and it’s not that easy to find in the stores. Way Fair had a wonderful selection at a great price for the bedroom and shipping was with in a few days!
So I purchased on line which can be daunting because sometimes an item may look different from the on line pictures. I decided to order swatches of the wallpaper patterns I most liked. This was a charge of $5.00 which I thought was well worth it. The wallpaper would cost more to return if I didn’t like the look for the bedroom.
Next I went to my favorite stores when purchasing bedding, I also brought the wallpaper swatch with me. I found a beautiful set at Tuesday Morning! The color was perfect and it matched well with the wallpaper swatch I brought along.
Back on line to Wayfair for a bedroom area rug I went. They had a sale I couldn’t pass up! The area rug was perfect and matched with the other items I had gathered for my master bedroom update! Just a note, Way Fair has sales often and have a great selection for the home.
I was really moving along on the update. During all this time I had also been going on line on the face book market place looking for lighting for my room. I found a chandelier and two bedside lamps. All would need to be painted to match the décor of the room update. The purchase of these items from market place kept me in the budget.

Items to paint the bedside lamps and chandelier I already had.
The grand total for the master bedroom update was under the $500.00 budget that I set by a few dollars!
I found some great deals for my master bedroom update. Patience is key when updating or remodeling a room or a home. It takes time to find great deals to keep with in a certain allowance or budget. End of the season sales are the best on line or in the store! Searching for items in the stores I always find the best sale items on the end caps.
A few more tips for the master bedroom
A few more tips on how I create that special master bedroom for my husband and I. Because my husband likes to watch tv in the room and I like it quite so I can read. We found an ear plug set to use with the television for my husband, so I don’t hear the television. Because I wanted a calming effect in our room I have soft lights for our bedside lamps. Lighting is everything in a room!
Keeping a cool bedroom also helps with that cozy feel, you’ll also sleep better in a cool room. We have the nest thermostat a gift from our son, from our room we tell it to lower the temp and it does! No more getting out of bed to fix the thermostat. Another thing we did for our room is put the lights on a remote control, actually we have many lights in the house on the remote. We have the clickers in the master bedroom and we control the lights from the room. No more getting out of bed when we are comfortable because someone forgot to turn the lights off.
Another item I have in our bedroom is a sleep machine that plays rain, soft waves, tropical sounds and music. This item is great to help me fall asleep!
All of this helps to create the most comfortable, cozy elegant master bedroom!
I’m so happy how my master bedroom update turned out!
So this is how to update the master bedroom on a budget.
I hope you were able to gather some ideas and tips for a master bedroom update.
